Ilhan Omar says she 'will not be silenced' as her home is searched by federal agents

WASHINGTON, 13 Oct. - (ANA) - Agents searched the home of the congresswoman on Monday.
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar said she will "not be silenced" after federal agents searched her home today. The Justice Department said Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a judicially authorised search warrant in the Washington, DC, area in connection with an ongoing federal investigation, but provided no other details. The nature and scope of the investigation were unclear, though officials in Donald Trump's administration have repeatedly hinted at an inquiry targeting Mrs Omar. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin last month cited an "ongoing investigation".

The Minnesota congresswoman is a Somali-born Democrat. She responded to the search with a statement on X, in which she called it an "attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement".

"For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation," she said. "I will not be silenced." The Justice Department said in a statement that Monday's enforcement action "is part of an ongoing federal investigation".

A DoJ spokesperson said: "Today in the Washington, DC area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorised search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation."

The search, which comes just weeks before next month's midterm contests that will determine control of the House and the Senate, was swiftly condemned by top Democrats in Congress.

"For years, Donald Trump and far-right extremists have relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Omar with vile personal attacks and baseless accusations," top House Democratic leaders said in a statement.

"Now, less than 30 days until the midterm election, his violent mass deportation machine has descended upon the home of a duly elected Member of Congress and her family."

Mr Trump, as recently as this past weekend, brought up Mrs Omar at a rally in Tennessee, where he spoke about her upbringing and suggested that Vice President JD Vance "and our people" were investigating her.

Omar, who was first elected to the House in 2018, represents Minnesota's 5th District, including Minneapolis.   - (ANA) -
