State-owned enterprises are playing a growing role in the global economy
PRIS, 26 Oct. - (ANA) - The economic footprint of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) has doubled over the past decade.
In 2024, some 33 800 SOEs held $141 trillion in assets, equivalent to 126% of global GDP, and employed 43 million people. Sound governance is therefore key to ensuring they contribute to fair and competitive markets while delivering value in the public interest.
Financial SOEs held over 70% of SOE assets in 2024, while non-financial SOEs accounted for 77% of SOEs and around three-quarters of SOE employment.
Some 72% of non-financial SOEs were domiciled in emerging markets. China has the largest SOE sector, accounting for 56% of non-financial SOEs globally, 61% of their employment and 62% of their assets. - (ANA) -
