DiEM25 and MERA25 condemn German government’s ban of Palestine Congress in Berlin

BERLIN, 15 April. - (ANA) - DiEM25 and its political party in Germany MERA25 condemn the decision of the German police and government to shut down the Palestine Congress.

The police stormed into the building and turned off the electricity supply when a video by the Palestinian researcher Salman Abu Sitta was being streamed. His son, the plastic and reconstructive surgeon and rector of the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sitta, who had been denied entry at the Berlin Airport, is now being deported.

During the horrors of the Israeli bombardment of Gaza, Abu Sitta spent 43 days in Gaza with Doctors Without Borders, working at the Al-Shifa Hospital. He wanted to share his experiences at the Congress. In a video posted on X, DiEM25 co-founder and leader of the party MeRA25 in Greece, Yanis Varoufakis, recorded his reaction to this decision and the speech he was about to give at the Palestine Congress:

“I am neither Jewish nor Palestinian. But I am incredibly proud to be here amongst Jews and Palestinians – to blend my voice for Peace and Universal Human Rights with Jewish Voices for Peace and Universal Human Rights – with Palestinian Voices for Peace and Universal Human Rights. Being together, here, today, is proof that Coexistence is Not Only Possible – but that it is here! Already.”

Karin De Rigo, MERA25 Germany’s top candidate for the European elections, who was going to moderate a panel discussion with Yanis Varoufakis and deliver the closing intervention had also shared recently:

"We stand in solidarity with all those seeking justice and are committed to the principles of democracy and human rights. This Congress represents a significant moment for those of us advocating for Palestinian rights, offering a platform for solidarity against repression and a pathway to engage the German government on issues of accountability. Joining forces with other organisations at the Palestine Congress, we aim to contribute to the global dialogue on justice for Palestine.  We're committed to calling out and confronting Germany's involvement in the atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza," Karin de Rigo shared.

DiEM25 is a pan-European movement of democrats, united under the conviction that the EU will only survive if it is radically transformed. The environmental, economic and coronavirus crisis have shown what real solutions for the majority and not the minority can only come about if we join forces across borders. This is the mission of DiEM25: through a coordinated effort, across Europe, to unite citizens and create enough energy to save the EU from itself.   - (ANA) -
