MEPs to sue Commission over 'blank cheque' to Egyptian dictator Sisi

BRUSSELS, 27 April. - (ANA) - MEPs are preparing to take the European Commission to court over its new €7.4 billion aid package for Egypt, pointing to the human rights abuses presided over by president Abdel Fattah el Sisi's government.

The EU Commission finalised an economic investment and migration pact with Egypt on 17 March that will be worth €7.4 billion to Cairo over the coming four years.

The agreement, described by officials as a "comprehensive and strategic partnership," is the latest and arguably most ambitious in a series of deals the EU commission has brokered with North African states over the past year.

The EU executive has signed similar agreements with Tunisia and Mauritania.   - (ANA) -
