Israeli kills more than 60 Palestinians in Gaza as thousands flee south
ISRAELI OCCUPIED AND STARVED GAZA, 21 Sept. - (ANA) - Israel’s deadly military assault on Gaza City has continued as the UN warned of a worsening humanitarian disaster amid the mass displacement of civilians, with at least 61 Palestinians killed since the early hours of Saturday.
Last month, the Israeli government announced plans to occupy Gaza City and has focused its most recent offensive, which started in early September, on the city and other areas in the north of the Gaza Strip.
Hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee south with no safe place to go, with around 900,000 still trapped in Gaza City, unable or refusing to leave.
Gaza’s Civil Defence said on Telegram that Gaza City was currently witnessing violent airstrikes, shelling and gunfire.
Al-Jazeera reported that 31 Palestinians had been killed across the enclave
Eight Palestinians were killed when Israeli forces bombed a home in the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood, southwest of Gaza City.
A further six people were killed when Israel bombed the Tuffah area of Gaza. Among the victims of Israel's brutal assault was Majed Abu Salmiya, the brother of al-Shifa Hospital’s Director Muhammad Abu Salmiya, along with some of his relatives, including children.
The Tal al-Hawa and Sheikh Radwan areas have come under heavy attack for the past few days, as Israel pushes deeper into the city.
Two children were killed, and more were wounded when Israeli warplanes struck a school where displaced people were sheltering near Al-Yarmouk Stadium in the city.
Two girls were also among those killed in a strike on the Al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza city.
A Palestinian woman was also killed in a strike that targeted the city’s Sabra neighbourhood near the Jordanian Hospital at dawn, according to a medical source.
Thousands of people are fleeing south in a desperate attempt to escape the genocidal war, as critical food and medical supplies run thin amid a famine caused by Israel's siege.
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNWRA, said 6,000 aid trucks were waiting to be allowed into the besieged territory, prevented by Israel.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that the ongoing airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza City "continue to take a heavy toll on exhausted civilians," while "the influx of newly displaced people into the southern Gaza Strip is increasing the pressure on already overstretched services."
UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said at his daily press briefing in New York that his colleagues on the ground report that people are "arriving late into the night, many walking for hours without food, water or shelter."
On Thursday, a UN Security Council resolution to end the nearly two-year war was blocked by Israel’s main ally the United States.
Ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas have been stalled by Israeli intransigence, with an unprecedented airstrike on the Qatari capital Doha earlier this month targeting Hamas negotiators.
Six people were killed, including five junior members of Hamas and one Qatari security official.
Egypt, one of the key mediators of ceasefire negotiations, is growing increasingly concerned with the exodus of Palestinians to southern Gaza, worried that Israel will force them into the Sinai Peninsula. - (ANA) -
