Quiet Kyiv suburb obliterated by Russian bombs

KYIV, 28 Sept. - (ANA) - Four people were killed in a 12-hour overnight Russian bombardment of Kyiv that left a quiet residential street flattened.
Photographs of the aftermath showed a rubble-strewn road with the roofs of several homes caved in and cars buried in debris.
There has been no official confirmation of the location of the strike, but local media said it happened in the capital’s western district of Borshchahivka.
The south-eastern city of Zaporizhzhia was also badly hit overnight.
During the onslaught in Kyiv, residents took cover in bomb shelters as missiles struck civilian infrastructure and debris from intercepted drones fell from the sky.
Ukrainian authorities had earlier sent alerts to residents, warning that Russian bombers were nearby.
Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, said the “savage” attack lasted for more than 12 hours and involved 500 drones and more than 40 missiles.
A hospital and a residential neighbourhood were among the sites hit during the bombardment, authorities said.
Timur Tkachenko, head of the capital’s military administration, said four people had so far been confirmed killed and at least 10 had been injured. Among the dead was a 12-year-old girl.
“The Russians have restarted the child death counter,” he wrote on Telegram.
Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, said two of the fatalities came after a fire broke out at a hospital.
“Russia launched another massive air attack on Ukrainian cities while people were sleeping,” Andriy Sybiha, Ukraine’s foreign minister, wrote on X.
“Again, hundreds of drones and missiles, destroying residential buildings and causing civilian casualties,” he added.
Mr Sybiha posted footage of a multi-storey apartment block on fire, which he said was a result of the attack.
Calling on the world to “back president [Donald] Trump’s efforts and halt any Russian imports,” Mr Zelensky said Ukraine would continue its policy of trying to disrupt Russian energy exports in response.
Meanwhile, Polish and Dutch fighter jets were scrambled to patrol the skies over eastern Poland early on Sunday, as Warsaw sought to secure its airspace against any Russian incursion.
The Polish defence ministry described the operation as “preventative” and said it aimed to protect citizens in areas adjacent to the Ukrainian border.
Dutch F-35 fighter jets supported the Polish air force in a show of Nato co-operation, while German soldiers manning Patriot air defence systems were also put on high alert.
At 8am local time, the Polish defence ministry announced that the operation had been completed and that no violations of its airspace had taken place.
Tensions have risen between Nato and Russia in the wake of a large-scale Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace early in September.
A Polish decision to shoot down the drones was the first time that a Nato member had reacted to a Russian provocation with direct fire.
A further incursion by Russian jets into Estonian airspace, as well as drone interference at several European airports, has intensified concerns that the Kremlin is escalating its hybrid attacks on Nato.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday, Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, denied that his country had any intention of starting a war with the Western alliance.
He also stated that “any aggression against my country will be met with a decisive response”. - (ANA) -
