Outrage in Lebanon as extremist Israeli settlers offer land for 'sale' in south

BEIRUT, 16 Nov. - (ANA) - Israeli advertisements published by far-right settlers have offered properties and land for sale in  southern Lebanon have triggered outrage in the latter country, amid increasing Israeli threats to resume the devastating war that ended in November 2024.

The Ori Tzafon Israeli settler movement, launched a campaign calling on Israeli investors to "head north" and invest in real estate in southern Lebanon, a region that continues to be bombed by Israel despite the 2024 ceasefire.

Annotated maps shared by the settler group have been shared on various websites and social media platforms seen by The New Arab, and show areas including the west Beqaa, Hasbaya, Chebaa farms, Tyre, Bint Jbeil, and Marjayoun labelled with Hebrew names.

The map states that each plot of land will be priced at around 300,000 Shekels, or $80,000.

The movement dubbed the land and properties the "future of new settlements".  This has prompted a wave of condemnation in Lebanon, with activists and commentators calling it an example of Israeli expansionism and colonialism.

"Now the entire population must rise up," one person commented on the maps, hinting that Lebanese people should not tolerate Israeli settlements and properties in the country.

"Where is Joseph Aoun, where are his deputies, where are the state officials- are they happy with the creation of Greater Israel and them owning Lebanese land? Where are the Lebanese people, the army, all of them?" another wrote.

This is not the first time Ori Tzafon has promoted settlement in Lebanon, with previous examples including them encouraging settlers to "buy" homes in the south of the country and saying that they overlook "green mountains and picturesque natural scenery".

The advertisements come as Israel continues to bomb southern Lebanon.

"This wall and those maps are not merely lines and names, they’re an attempt to erase the very identity of the land. And when you ask who’s responsible, it becomes clear that the blame falls on everyone in the state, while Israel acts freely without restraint," Lebanese media outlet Naqd said.

"But in the end, it’s the people of the south who bear the burden watching the violations unfold before their eyes, powerless to do anything about them," they added.

This appeared to be a reference to Israeli forces building a wall deep inside southern Lebanon, amid ongoing strikes and increasing threats of a renewed offensive.

Israeli media reports confirmed the construction of the massive concrete wall two kilometres into Lebanese territory, facing the border towns of Maroun al-Ras and Aitaroun.

In Aitaroun, Israeli forces blew up three homes early Tuesday morning after destroying other buildings in the village of Houla.

In recent weeks, Israel has stepped up waves of airstrikes on southern Lebanon and parts of the east, near the border with Syria, claiming to be targeting Hezbollah fighters and assets.

Israel alleges that Hezbollah is using the ceasefire to rearm, despite the fact that the group was severely weakened in the 2024 war, with most of its top leadership killed.

Hundreds of Lebanese have been killed, including many civilians, in Israeli air strikes since the frequently violated November 2024 ceasefire was brokered.

Thousands of Lebanese civilians have also been displaced from their homes in the south, and have had their livelihoods cut off due to the Israeli attacks.   - (ANA) -
