Africa seeks 'green growth,' as EU and US stall on climate finance
Belém, BRAZIL, 17 Nov. - (ANA) - African leaders are pitching for investment in green growth and industrialisation, as Western powers fail to deliver on climate finance commitments.
“We are not here to negotiate our survival. We are here to design the world’s next climate economy,” said Ethiopia’s prime minister Abiy Ahmed at the African Climate Summit in Addis Ababa in September.
That, say African diplomats, is a reflection of a new and more assertive push by the African leadership.
The climate crisis demands structural change, not incremental reform. If COP30 in Belém delivers on fairness and equity, it can be remembered as the turning point where climate justice and global prosperity finally aligned, write Ketakandriana Rafitoson and Carlos María Correa.
The UN COP30 climate summit is set to conclude in Belém, Brazil, on Friday. - (ANA) -
