Israel used banned cluster munitions in south Lebanon
LONDON, 22 Nov. - (ANA) - British newspaper The Guardian has revealed new evidence suggesting that Israel used banned cluster munitions extensively during its recent 13-month war in Lebanon.
The report is based on photographs of munition remnants found in southern Lebanon, which were verified by six independent weapons experts. The images show remnants of two modern types of cluster munitions developed by Elbit Systems: 155mm M999 Barak Ethan shells and 227mm Raham Ethan guided rockets, found at three sites south of the Litani River, including Wadi Zibqin, Wadi Barghouz, and Wadi Deir Seryan.
Weapons experts, including researchers from Amnesty International and the Arms Research Services, confirmed the identity of the munitions, while Elbit Systems declined to comment on the report.
The Guardian notes that this represents the first evidence of Israel using cluster munitions since the 2006 war, when the dispersal of more than one million unexploded submunitions in southern Lebanon led to over 400 deaths in the following years. - (ANA) -
