‘Holy grail’ of supercars sold for record £15m at auction
LAS VEGAS, USA, 25 Nov. - (ANA) - An extremely rare supercar has become the most expensive new vehicle ever to be sold at auction after being bought for £15.8 million ($20 million).
One of only five made, the Gordon Murray S1 LM went under the hammer with Sotheby’s in Las Vegas last weekend after being flown into the auction by helicopter.
The vehicle smashed the record for a new car sale at auction, previously held by a Bugatti Chiron Profilée, which sold for £8.1m in another Sotheby’s sale in Paris in 2023.
Boasting a top speed of 200mph and a 4.3-litre, V12 engine, the car is named after its creator Gordon Murray, who also designed the McLaren F1.
Shelby Myers, head of private sales at RM Sotheby’s, said: “There are cornerstone cars found in major collections around the world, from the 300 SL to the F40 and other celebrated icons.
“Even the McLaren F1, which many consider one of the greatest automobiles ever created, was still a production model.
“The S1 LM is something entirely different. It comes from the same mind, Gordon Murray, but without production constraints, without compromise and created exactly to his vision. One of five and fully bespoke. It stands at a higher level of significance in modern collecting.
“It is a true holy grail and one of the most important modern supercars ever built.”
As well as breaking the record for priciest new car to sell at auction, the Gordon Murray S1 LM is also in the top 20 for the most expensive cars of all time. -(ANA) -
