Hamas to hand over administration of Gaza within days as Israeli bombing continues
ISRAELI OCCUPIED GAZA, 19 January. - (ANA) - Israel continued its violations of the Gaza ceasefire on Sunday morning, wounding several people, including a child.
According to the Palestinian Wafa news agency, medical sources said several civilians were left wounded in the al-Zeitoun neighbourhood, located southeast of Gaza City.
Local media reports also said that Israeli forces carried out air raids, demolished homes and targeted refugee camps.
In the eastern areas of Gaza City, Israeli forces flattened residential buildings using explosives, while military vehicles opened fire towards the al-Tuffah neighbourhood and Jabalia.
The latest developments come as reports on Sunday said that Hamas intends to hand over responsibilities for the enclave to the Gaza administration committee.
The New Arab’s Arabic language sister site, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, reported that the group sent a message to mediators, demanding that the first phase of the truce is fully implemented before the issue of disarmament commences under the second phase.
The message comes after the US administration said that phase two had already started two days ago.
A leading source in Hamas said the group had urged in a meeting held in Cairo last week that Israel fulfils the terms of the first phase of the deal, noting that the Rafah crossing had not been opened, nor have prefabricated homes been allowed in or equipment to remove rubble.
The group also noted that hundreds of Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire came into effect.
A Hamas leader familiar with the talks in Cairo also said that the group reaffirmed its full commitment to handing over the administration of the trip to the newly formed committee, which held its first meeting on Thursday at the US embassy in Cairo.
Another senior Hamas leader confirmed that the group had reached an agreement with Egyptian mediators the details concerning the handover of the administration.
"It can now be said that Gaza is under the administration of the committee, and it is expected that all relevant parties will fulfil their promises to deliver aid, begin reconstruction and alleviate the suffering of the Strip’s residents," the leader said.
The movement also commented on accusations made against them that not enough has been done to return the remains of the final Israeli captive that was held in Gaza.
The group said they did everything in their power to find the body, and that Israel had stopped the entry of essential equipment needed to remove concrete and rubble to be able to find bodies.
Meanwhile, the head of the Egyptian General Intelligence, Major General Hassan Rashad, met on Sunday with the head of the Palestinian National Committee, over the administration of Gaza.
Discussions centred around responsibilities and Cairo’s commitment to the success of the Gaza administration. - (ANA) -
