MICHIGAN, USA, 20 January. - (ANA) - A winter storm caused a pile-up of more than 100 vehicles including at least 30 lorries in Michigan.

 

Drone footage posted to the Fox Weather X account showed the road completely covered in snow, with jack-knifed trucks and vehicles that had slid off the road in a huge chain-reaction crash.

 

The snowstorm moving across the United States has blanketed large parts of the state in snow.

 

Winds of 40mph were recorded at the crash site and more than a foot of snow.

 

One driver said he could barely see the road in front of him as snow blew across Interstate 196 south of the Michigan city of Grand Rapids on Monday morning.

 

Police closed the motorway in both directions as officials worked to clear the road of vehicles, which was expected to take several hours. There were numerous injuries but no deaths, the Michigan State Police said.

 

“It was a little scary just listening to everything, the bangs and booms behind you,” Pedro Mata Jr told the Associated Press. He was able to safely avoid crashing his truck into other vehicles by pulling off the side of the road.

 

As snow continued to fall on the crash site, stranded passengers had to be bussed to a nearby high school.

 

Temperatures have plummeted across vast parts of the country. Unusually, snow fell as far south as the Florida Panhandle in the early hours of Sunday, with some residents reportedly staying up to get a rare glimpse of the flurries.

 

The National Weather Service issued warnings about either extremely cold temperatures or the potential for winter storms across several states, starting in northern Minnesota and stretching south and east into Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.  - (ANA) -
