CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, 14 Sept. - (ANA) - A horror crash involving multiple vehicles has left at least 21 people dead in South Africa.

 

Two minibus taxis are said to have smashed into each other head-on, while a third vehicle collided with them moments after on the country’s N1 highway.

 

The crash happened in the Western Cape Province at around 11.30pm (local time) on Sunday between the towns of Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, around 380 kilometres east of Cape Town, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said in a post on X.

 

Images from the scene show a multi-car pile-up with debris scattered over the carriageway and passengers’ belongings visible.

 

Three people were rushed to hospital by paramedics as emergency crews descended on the scene last night amid reports that several passengers had been seriously injured.

 

Authorities believe that the two minibus taxis collided head-on, before the other vehicle crashed into them, Western Cape Mobility said.

 

Minibus taxis are the main mode of public transport for many people in South Africa and are often involved in fatal collisions.

 

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the crash.  - (ANA) -
