Iraq renews calls for regional Gulf security pact
BAGHDAD, 19 Oct. - (ANA) - Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has said regional stability must come from within the region and not from external powers, in calls for new security talks among Gulf states.
Speaking at a media conference after the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation conference in Baghdad, Mr Hussein described the security situation as critical.
"The security situation in the region is complex and the region, in fact, as a whole is under fire, so the first priority we need is stability and security,” he said.
“We cannot buy security from abroad. We need internal security, and internal security is co-operation between the countries of the region."
Iraq had proposed a formula bringing together the six Gulf Co-operation Council states plus Iraq and Iran: what Mr Hussein referred to as the 6+2, or the eight geographically Gulf states.
“If a meeting is held between these countries, the issue of security will be raised, the issue of stopping the war will be raised, and initiatives to start peace and stability will be raised,” he said. - (ANA) -
