Iran/Strait of HormuzBack

Iran says it will not relinquish control over Hormuz, as IRGC denies targeting US embassy in Riyadh

TEHRAN, 05 April. - (ANA) - Iran on Saturday said that it will not allow the Strait of Hormuz to return to its previous state, suggesting it will continue to control the vital passageway amid and possibly after the US-Israeli war on the country.

Iran’s parliament speaker Abbas Goudarzi said on Saturday that the strait had become a "strategic advantage," telling the Tasnim news agency that the management of the passageway will remain in the hands of Iranian armed forces.

"No country has the right to pass through it without Tehran’s permission, and Tehran will defend this strategic location with all its military capabilities," he said.

"The enemies thought they were able to destroy the Iranian navy, but the armed forces did not weaken, but rather gained more experience on the battlefield and were able to identify new capabilities," he added, stating that Iran "would not accept compromise or surrender, but will stand firm in order to establish Iran’s position in the new world order".

This comes as recent US intelligence reports said that Iran is not considering opening the Strait in the near future, despite the consequences for the global economy, and intends to use control over the route as a bargaining chip against the US.

In another development, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) denied any involvement in targeting the US Embassy in Riyadh following reports in US media.

The IRGC said in a statement it had "absolutely no connection to it" and claimed that “this was undoubtedly a Zionist act, given the Zionist enemy’s strategy".

The statement continued: "The Iranian armed forces have a clear target bank, and we have previously issued warnings to neighbouring and Muslim countries about the Zionist entity’s attempts to incite discord".

The latest developments come as Iran executed two men who were convicted of being part of the outlawed People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) opposition group, amid the ongoing war.

The men were executed on Saturday morning, following a sentence from the country’s supreme court which upheld earlier convictions that they were members of PMOI/MEK.

"Abolhassan Montazer and Vahid Baniamerian… were hanged after trial and their sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court," the Iranian judiciary website, Mizan Online, reported on Saturday.

Last month, four other members of the group were executed, and were identified as: Mohammad Taghavi, Akbar Daneshvarkar, Babak Alipour and Pouya Ghobadi.

The group has been targeted after it fell out with Tehran’s leadership in the early 1980’s, and has since been designated as a “terrorist” organisation in Iran. The PMOI/MEK group has since operated in exile.   - (ANA) -
